HVAC repair contractors are ready to help you when you need them, but you can make the job much smoother by finding the brand and model number and giving them the information over the phone.
There are many different types of conditioners and these range from decades old to brand new models. You can make things easier on yourself and your contractor by giving them the information they need and a full explanation of what it is or is not doing. If the contractor knows the model, he or she will be much better able to estimate the cost of the parts and service over the phone.
When an air conditioner freezes, there can be problems with the drain, too. This can freeze and it may appear to be a plumbing issue. When this occurs, the first thing you need to do is make sure the compressor is turned off. If you turn it to the fan setting, this will shut off the compressor and start melting the ice, which will make it easier for your contractor to fix it in a shorter amount of time. Here are a few more tips for keeping your AC up and running:
At the start of summer, make sure the outside part of the unit is clear of grass, leaves, and other stuff that can fly into and plug it up. Remember to shut the power off to the AC before you start any heavy-duty clearing.
The AC coils and fan blades should be thoroughly cleared at least once a year and the beginning of summer is an excellent time to do it. Turning off the unit is top priority because it will make your job much easier and safer. Once you have turned it off, you can safely take off the blades and the grill and clean them.
Be sure to keep the fan condenser parts lubricated with oil. You will have to remove port caps in order to this and SAE 20 is most highly recommended.
By cleaning your air conditioner and having an HVAC contractor service it by checking the motor, lubricating the condenser, and checking freon levels at least once a year, your AC will work at top performance for much longer.
Never let your house get too hot in the summertime. It is better for you and your AC unit if it keeps the house cool rather than waiting until it feels like an oven before you cool it down.
