However, this is something that people always think is the fault of the gas used in the machine as a refrigerant. The truth of the matter is that this is usually caused by other problems in the machine itself. The most common issues that cause this is poor airflow and the problems it causes.
When the airflow of any air conditioner starts to become restricted, it will start to cause issues for the cooling system of the machine.
The extreme cases of this occur when the unit is left untreated. This can be bad because the cooling coil itself is actually harmed when it loses its temperature-pressure balance. When this is compromised, the machine will start a downhill spiral of destruction in itself.
When the temperatures of the machine drop too low, they will eventually be below the room dew point temperature. If this happens, you will notice that the conditioner starts to act like a refrigerator. Instead of cooling the air inside of it the machine will start to collect and hold it, therefore causing it to eventually freeze.
The job of an air conditioner is to basically dehumidify the air in the room, not refrigerate it. When the moisture in the room is removed we will start to feel warmer and more comfortable. The machine must therefore always have an internal temperature in its cooling coil that is higher than the temperature of the room itself.
When it drops below the temperature of the room it will start to freeze up and produce ice. However, there are a few things that can cause your conditioner to start to act up and build ice.
Clean Your Filter
A dirty filter is one problem that happens regularly. This can be caused by people who smoke cigarettes and don’t change the filter. Smokers should always change the filter once a week.
It is easy to remove the filter from the air conditioner. Just pop off the plastic cover. After you remove the filter, soak it in water. When you do this, it loosens up the dirt.
You then sprinkle some detergent onto the surface of the filter and let it sit for a few minutes. After you do this you can add warm water to the sink to completely cover the filter, soak for around 15 minutes, and then remove the filter from the water and rinse it.
Let it air dry so that it dries properly.
Clean Your Coils
A blocked or dirty cooling coil is another major issue that can cause icing up in the machines. You need to be sure to always run regular maintenance on your machine so that it works at tip top shape.
Doing this every two or three years is normal, but if you do it at least once a year you will be saving yourself a lot of money and not having to work as hard. The coil itself has to be cleaned in order for the machine to work as the coil will become surrounded by smog, pollen, and dirt.
You do have to completely take apart the entire machine to do this, so be sure you have the proper tools and some time. The compressor of the machine can actually blow out if you don’t clean the coil regularly, and that will be extremely costly, so be sure to keep an eye on the coils.
Check the Compressor
The compressor is another problem item that people commonly have in air conditioning machines. You need this item to be sure that the refrigerant is pumped through the machine.
When this item becomes damaged you will notice that the cold control is cut off and the machine starts to freeze up. Be sure that if you know your compressor is broken that you fix it before it destroys the air conditioner.
Another important item inside of the machine is refrigerant. Be sure that there is always enough of this inside. However, don’t add too much. Not enough will lead to problems with not enough cool air, but if there is too much you’ll notice that it freezes up. A delicate balance must be maintained in order to have refrigerant work properly.
You need to also be sure that the temperature outside is right. This means that if it is less than 60 degrees outside, your temperature control will be off. Change your thermostat and machine so that this does not become a problem.
Although there are other things that can go wrong with an air conditioner, these are definitely some of the top things to look out for.
