Filter changing intervals are determined by several factors. One factor is the type of home you live in. It is not good to put off changing your filters over too long a period, because it will decrease your AC’s effectiveness and increase your operating costs. It is a waste of money that is totally avoidable.
If your AC is equipped with an efficient filter, then you want to keep it maintained properly. Many people are satisfied with pleated filters, but their efficiency level is anywhere from 10 to 60 percent. Lots of companies boast of higher efficiency levels than that from their filters.
Pleated filters will need to be replaced every 3 to 6 months. If your location is an area with high levels of dust, replace them every 3 months. If you have a low level of dust, then go with 6 months.
If you’d like to have a filter that operates with maximum efficiency, then try out an electronic, electrostatic, or a HEPA filter. They are very effective and don’t need changed as often.
1. Electrostatic Filters – These filters probably contain the best blend of value and efficiency. Normally you’d have to pay 2 to 6 times as much for them as you would a traditional throwaway type. However, they are actually more cost effective in the long run, because you can clean them and recycle them just by washing them.
2. Electronic Filters – When these get dirty they can interfere with your flow of air. The dust builds up and inhibits their capacity to drain the dust from the air and they cease to function properly. You would have to clean them and dry their electronic cells (you soak them in an HVAC cleaner solution).
3. HEPA Filters – If you want to locate the filters that are the most efficient, then try the HEPA filters. Their only drawback is clogging up quickly. That hampers the free flow of air and causes them to become unusable. These filters need to be checked on a monthly basis.
You local hardware store can recommend some other types of filters that are more economical and come in packs of four at a price of about $10. However, these filters rate very low when you compare them to the kind of filters mentioned above.
