Here is a list of useful tips to help keep your A/C system safe from thieves:
Think about security when selecting a location for the outdoor system. It may be tempting to install the cooling unit at the back of the building, but it is safer to place the conditioner in the front yard.
Roof-installed air cooling systems should be protected too.
. Place outdoor AC units close to the building. This minimizes the length of copper piping needed between the unit and the building
. Install all outdoor cooling units on concrete bases
. Attach the air con unit to the concrete base using heavy-duty anchors
. Cover external air conditioners with heavy-duty metal cages that can be locked
. Invest in a heavy-duty cage made from expanded metal mesh or cast-iron – these metals cannot be easily cut with ordinary tools
Some home and business owners are spray-painting the copper piping in a bid to deter thieves. The salvage yards are not prepared to accept spray-painted copper.
