How to Clean or Replace Your AC Filter
A clean filter is the single most impactful thing you can do for your air conditioner. A dirty filter restricts airflow, forces the compressor to work harder, increases energy consumption by 5-15%, and can lead to ice buildup on the evaporator coil.
How Often Should You Clean Your Filter?
- Window AC / Portable: Every 2 weeks during heavy use
- Mini-Split: Every 2-4 weeks
- Central HVAC (1-inch filter): Monthly replacement
- Central HVAC (4-inch filter): Every 3-6 months
If you have pets, live in a dusty area, or run the AC 24/7, clean or replace more frequently.
Cleaning a Reusable Filter
- Turn off the AC unit
- Remove the filter (usually slides out from the front panel)
- Vacuum the filter with a brush attachment to remove loose dust
- Rinse under lukewarm running water (never use hot water)
- Let it air dry completely — at least 2-3 hours
- Reinstall the filter and turn the unit back on
Never run the AC without a filter. Dust and debris will coat the evaporator coil, reducing efficiency and potentially damaging the system.
When to Replace Instead of Clean
Reusable mesh filters last for years with proper cleaning. But if the filter is torn, warped, or the mesh is clogged beyond cleaning, replace it. Disposable fiberglass or pleated filters (common in central HVAC) should always be replaced, not cleaned. MERV 8-11 filters are the sweet spot for most homes — they catch dust, pollen, and pet dander without overly restricting airflow.
Signs Your Filter Needs Attention
- Reduced airflow from the vents
- AC running longer cycles than usual
- Visible dust buildup on the filter
- Musty smell when the AC is running
- Higher than expected electricity bill
- Ice forming on the evaporator coil
