Then the liquid refrigerant is metered into the evaporator by means of an expansion valve. As the refrigerant absorbs heat from the space being cooled through the evaporator, it then returns to the outside unit through the return tube. The tubes are usually refrigeration grade copper but other types of tubing are sometimes utilized depending on the circumstances.
